Description:
The Bachelor of Science degree program will provide the student with a general science education. Given the ever-increasing importance of science and technology, this degree will prepare the student to cope with the science-based world of today and the increasing technological demands of the future. It will also prepare the student for the challenges Science presents to the modern world by including courses in Scientific Reasoning, the History of Science, and Ethics, Science, Technology, and the Environment. There are no majors or minors within the Science program.

General Degree Requirements:
Total credits required in program 120
Minimum credits required
- at the senior (300 or 400) level 75
- in Science courses 75
- senior (300 or 400) level credit in Science courses 45
- at the 400 level in Science courses 12
- in Arts and/or Administrative Studies courses 24
(no more than 9 credits from any one discipline)
- Science courses from Athabasca University 30

Maximum credits allows
- in any one Science discipline 45
- at the preparatory (100) level 6

Core course requirements:
1. A total of 18 credits in junior (200) level laboratory science courses to be selected from at least three of the following areas: Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography*, Geology or Physics
Note BIOL 230 is not accepted as a lab science course
2. Six credits in Mathematics from:
MATH 215 Introduction to Statistics
MATH 265 Introduction to Calculus I
MATH 270 Linear Algebra I
3. Three credits in Computer Science from:
COMP 220 Programming in FORTRAN 77
COMP 268 Computer Programming with PASCAL
4. SCIE 326 Scientific Reasoning (may be used to satisfy the minimum senior level Science credit requirement)
5. PHIL 371 Ethics: Science, Technology, and the Environment** 6. HIST 404 Historical Foundations of Modern Science** or
HIST 386 Science and Technology in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries**
7. ENGL 255 English Writing Skills**

* Geography courses with a Science area of study designation.

**These core Arts courses may be used to fulfil the minimum credit requirements in Arts and/or Administrative Studies.

Bachelor of Science (Post Diploma) (four years - 120 credits, builds upon a diploma or technical certificate):
The Bachelor of Science (Post Diploma) is designed to allow students who have graduated from two-year science oriented technical programs at recognized colleges or technical institutions to continue studies towards a science degree. Students will be able to transfer up to 60 credits of applicable coursework towards the degree.

Students must complete a minimum of 30 credits through Athabasca University and may not complete more than 45 credits in any one science discipline.

- at the 400 level in Science courses 12

- completed through Athabasca University 30

Core course requirements:
- 18 credits of lab science at the 200 level, 6 of which must be taken through Athabasca University
- 6 credits in MATH, selected from:
MATH 215 Introduction to Statistics
MATH 265 Introduction to Calculus I
MATH 270 Linear Algebra I
- 6 credits in Computing Science, 3 of which must be at the senior (300 or 400 level)
- SCIE 326 Scientific Reasoning
- PHIL 371 Ethics, Science, Technology, and the Environment
- HIST 404 Historical Foundations of Modern Science
- ENGL 255 Introductory Composition

Students will be exempted from the ENGL 255 requirement if they successfully complete the Alberta Universities' Writing Competency Test, or satisfy one of the following:
- have a grade of 70 per cent or better in an Athabasca University English course or
- receive transfer credit for an English course in which a grade of B or better was achieved.


Entry requirements:
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must reside in Canada. Persons under 18 years of age may be admitted and enrolled in a program of study, provided they have obtained a high school matriculation diploma. Persons under 18 years of age who do not have a high school matriculation diploma may be admitted to the University by petitioning the Registrar for special consideration, provided the application for admission is accompanied by a letter of support from the person's high school principal or designate.
